Pharmacy Technician Program
New Horizons Computer Learning Center of Knoxville, TN is offering the Pharmacy Technician Program. The Pharmacy Technician Program is a six-month, training series designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career in the healthcare industry. Upon successful completion of this program, students will be equipped with the knowledge needed to achieve status as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), and will earn certification as a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS).
Course Titles:
HI-1011 – Medical Office Procedures & Administration
This course demonstrates and practices hands-on skills and competencies required to prepare the student for employment as an Administrative Medical Assistant.
Students will learn:
• Law, Ethics and Customer Service Skills in the Medical Office; telephone protocols
• Medical Records Creation, Documentation and Custodial Requirements
• Appointment Scheduling; Filing - alpha, numeric and terminal digit
• Bookkeeping: charges, payments and adjustments
• Necessary abbreviations for use in documentation
HI-1013 – Microsoft Office Specialist
Consist of Microsoft Word and Excel 2007 Levels 1, 2 and 3; which are designed to provide students with basic, intermediate, and advanced Word and Excel proficiencies.
HI-1014 A & B – Anatomy & Physiology with Medical Terminology
This course provides students with an understanding of the structure and function of the human body and the language of medical terminology.
Students will learn:
• Basic Physiology – All Systems
• Basic Anatomy – Healthy Body
• Medical Word Parts-Word Building System
• Advanced study of terms as they relate to each healthy body system
• How to pronounce, define, spell medical terminology
HI-1017 – Pharmacy Technician Principles and Practices (Part 1 & 2)
This course is comprised of two units designed to train the student in medication order processing, inventories, compounding, packaging, use of a prescription balance, HIPAA privacy act and computers. Upon completion of the course, students will have knowledge and skills in the areas of drug regulation and control, formulation, pharmaceutical terminology, and units of measurement.
Students will learn:
• To explain and demonstrate Asepsis & Infection Control procedures followed in a pharmacy.
• To explain and demonstrate the ability to solve pharmaceutical calculations.
• Pharmacy functions associated with drug purchasing and inventory control and maintaining accurate records.
• Drugs and Drug Therapy such as drug classes, dosage forms, brand and generic names as well as frequently prescribed medications for various disorders.
• The processes for preparing/dispensing prescriptions.
